In response to the House of Representatives' rejection of a Sentate compromise that would extend the payroll tax cut for two months, the White House launched a Twitter campaign to rally support for the extension. Forty dollars represents how much less the average American household will have to save or spend each paycheck if the House does not approve the tax cut; this figure adds up to about $1,000 a year that citizens will have to pay in taxes.
According to the White House, more than 30,000 responses have poured in on WhiteHouse.gov since Tuesday afternoon, and thousands more have been tweeted with the hashtag #40dollars.
