The white and blue sign outside heralds both the high-caloric lure inside and a needed respite from the heat: “20 Chicken Rings 4.99 Ice Bags $1.79 $2.79.” But there’s also a yellow and black diamond-shaped decal in the window that simply declares, “Safe Place.”
It’s part of the Chicago version of a program financed by the Department of Justice and aimed at public awareness of youth safety. The program is being rolled out in six cities over the next eight months. Chicago, the largest participating city, is first up, with a focus on youth homelessness; Denver follows, with an emphasis on child sexual abuse in bilingual communities.
