Tune in at noon today (Wednesday, February 22) to hear Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois deliver his Fiscal Year 2013 Budget Address at the Illinois Capitol. The address will demonstrate that money remains tight in state government, as the Governor proposes to close 14 facilities. According to the State Journal-Register in Springfield, Quinn’s budget plan suggests that the state of Illinois close a number of designated prisons and mental health centers as well as consolidate dozens of social service offices. He also recommends that tourist sites be shut down for up to two days during nonpeak seasons throughout the year. In all, more than 1,160 jobs will be eliminated as a result of the closures and will amount to savings of $100 million annually. To help stimulate the economy, Quinn is also proposing that the state spend $1 billion on education, water infrastructure, and state buildings, according to the Chicago Tribune. Two major budget issues that Quinn will not address today are state pension costs and Medicaid expenses, as they are still under negotiation.
