Websites and citizens alike are currently protesting pending legislation in Congress that would, in an attempt to end piracy, ultimately censor the Web and curtail American businesses. SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) are two Congressional bills targeting copyright infringement. While critics of the bills agree that online piracy is unacceptable, they believe that the terms and conditions laid out in the legislation prove problematic because they ineffectively deal with the issue by threatening the concept of the free and open Internet.

In a show of unified opposition to the bills, some websites like Wikipedia have blacked out their content for 24 hours. While Google has not shut down its services for the day, it has launched an online petition to “End Piracy, Not Liberty.” Those who oppose SOPA and PIPA are encouraged to sign here before the Senate begins voting on January 24.
